Zahara is a small, sleepy Andalusian fishing village. It’s just 30 kms north of Tarifa, on Spain’s Atlantic coast. There are plenty of bars, restaurants and hotels in Zahara. The area has become increasingly popular over the years. Zahara de los Atunes has some fantastic beaches; windswept and rugged, with crystal clear waters and fine white sands. Located at the foot of the bull route, the surrounding landscape is stunning; it remains completely unspoilt.
During the winter months, it can be quite and peaceful, whereas during the summer, it transforms into a trendy, lively and very popular spot.
The village of Zahara has its own special charm. It has strong associations with the Atlantic Ocean. You can still see the remains of monuments dating back to the 15th Century. The Castle de las Almadrabas (Castle of the Tunny Nets) was built by the Dukes of Medina Sidonia to protect against invasion from pirates. It was later used by the tuna fishermen for storing equipment. Unfortunately, it is in ruin today.
Finding accommodation shouldn’t be a problem, even during peak season. There are more and more hotels and apartments in Zahara de los Atunes opening up each year. Having said that, you can also still find plenty of chilled out beach cabins and hostels; all with a laid back, natural and cozy atmosphere.
People come here mainly for the beaches and relaxing pace of life. There are lots of bars in Zahara, many over-looking the seafront; you can relax and watch the spectacular sunsets that this area is famous for.
Tourism is on the increase all over the Costa de la Luz, yet Zahara de los Atunes remains untouched and unspoilt by it. It still has a wild and rugged charm; the landscape, ocean and climate will draw you back year after year. |
